Chennai, Mar 28: In a great escape act, three notorious grille offenders, arrested in Kolkata a month back and being taken back there to recover the stolen goods, escaped from the train as the escorting cops had dozed off.

With their hands-cuffed, the grille offenders were being taken by the Howrah Mail on March 24 by a team of ten police personnel, when they gave the slip to the cops in the wee hours, a couple of hours before the train was to reach Howrah station on March 26, Police sources told sources today.

The cops, including two armed inspectors, had allegedly dozed off when the incident took place.

The incident was said to be a major blunder by the police and was expected to cause a set back to the investigations.

What was more alarming was that they had unsuspectedly removed the handcuffs with the help of keys, jumped from the running train and escaped under the cover of darkness.

About ten grille offenders, who had been regularly striking at houses in the city and suburbs, were arrested by a special police team in Kolkata. They were taken into 15 days police custody for questioning on March 21.

After three days of interrogation here, the police team decided to take the trio--Samir, Abu Mannan and Swapan Saha--to Kolkata to recover the stolen goods and to look out for other members of the gang, who were at large.

The offenders had stashed in Kolkata, goods worth crores of rupees looted from Chennai.

A formal complaint was lodged with the Kolkata railway police and officials concerned, reports received here said.
