Shillong, Mar 28: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has decided to cancel 50 trade licences issued to non-tribals in Relief and Rehabilitation Colony at Rynjah here.

The KHADC chief executive member took the decision yesterday after the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) served a 15-day deadline demanding cancellation of the licences.

The FKJGP had lodged a complaint with KHADC recently against the 'indiscriminate' issuance of trade licences to non-tribals.

They alleged that the KHADC trade department had issued the licenses on recommendation of the president of RR Colony Welfare Society by violating the Trading by Non-Tribals (Regulation) Act 1954.

''The FKJGP is closely monitoring the policy of issuing trade licences to non-tribals in areas under KHADC jurisdiction,'' FKJGP general secretary Joe Marwein told reporters here.

He also added that it is necessary to stop issuing any further trade license as the indigenous people were able to carry out various kinds of trade and business activities.
