Chandigarh, Mar 28 (UNI) The alleged harassement of Moga Congress MLA Joginder Pal Jain by Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) workers led to a brief disruption in the proceedings of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha here today.

Opposition Congress MLAs were on their feet when Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, disallowed an adjournment motion by the Leader of the Opposition Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, to discuss the issue in the House.

The speaker maintained that the Leader of the Opposition could bring up the issue when she speaks on the motion of thanks on the Governor's Address.

Dissatisfied by the Speakers ruling, the Congress MLAs trooped to the well of the House shouting slogans against the government.

They demanded that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal give an assurance to the House that opposition members would not be harassed.

Amidst the slogan shouting, the House took up the call attention motion moved by Balbir Singh Bhatt (SAD) to discuss the destruction to the winter crops, particularly wheat due to unseasonal rains and hail storm.

At this juncture, Mr Badal got up and assured thE House that he would inquire into the matter. He also sought to assure the opposition that as MLAs were the elected representatives of the people, they would be given due respect.

The agitated opposition members resumed their seats after Mr Badal had given the assurance.
