Port Blair, Mar 28 (UNI)Andaman and Nicobar Islands MP and a senior Congress leader Manoranjan Bhakta has reiterated the demand of setting up a Legislative Assembly for the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In a letter addressed to Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the lone MP for these remote islands said during the last Lok Sabha elections, the Congress Mainfesto announced that a Mini Assembly for Small Union Territories would be provided.

''The same is still not implemented as promised in the Congress Mainfesto,'' Mr Bhakta added in his letter.

Talking to UNI today, he said the Andaman and Nicobar Administration was being run by Lt Governor and the ruling Congress Party in Andaman was not in a position to fulfill the aspirations of the people.

The MP said even other party leaders were of the opinion that a Legislative Assembly was needed for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Mr Bhakta had earlier requested Ms Gandhi to refer the matter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to enable him to look into the matter.

''Time and again I am raising the issue to provide democratic rights to the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which is unfortunately pending till now,'' he said in his letter addressed to Ms Gandhi.
