Guwahati, Mar 27: At least 22 Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) militants, who were arrested in Asom recently, have confessed to having links with Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).

The state government informed in the Assembly that it had instructed its Intelligence branch to probe into the ISI activities in the state including different links of six recently arrested ISI agents.

The government claimed that it had evidence of the arrested ISI agents of having foreign links and said there were 2500 militants active in the state out of which 1500 belonged to the banned ULFA while Mujahideen and Muslim United Liberation Tiger of Asom (MULTA) together had 350 cadres.

Other militant outfits active in the state included Karbi Longri North Cachar Liberation Front (KLNLF), Dima Halam Daogah (DHD), United Liberation Front of Barak Valley (ULFBV), Hmar People's Convention (HPC) and Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA).

Meanwhile, the state had adopted a four-pronged strategy to counter insurgency, that includes continuation of operation, waging a psychological war against insurgency, persuading the frustrated militants to join the mainstream and keeping the option of dialogue open for finding a solution to insurgency.
