New Delhi, Mar 26: Counsel appearing for Pepsi and Coke today contended before the Supreme Court that all prayers made in Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking ban on manufacture, sale and consumption of soft drinks on the grounds that they are harmful for health because of use of pesticide and chemicals, have already been complied with.

Senior counsel K K Venugopal and Harish Salve told a bench comprising Justices A K Mathur and Dalveer Bhandari that in order to check the quantity of pesticides and chemicals, the Food Safety Act has been enacted by the government and regulatory regime is in place. The Prevention of Food Adulteration Act is already there to check the contamination of the soft drinks.

The counsel also informed the court that the question of displaying on the bottle, the ingredients as well as their percentage in the soft drink, is a provision to be taken care of.

The two soft drink majors however, resisted the contention that it should be written on the bottle that ''soft drink is injurious to health" as is displayed on the packets of cigarettes.

The court granted six weeks' time to the petitioner to respond to the national level committee report and also directed the respondents to file their response, if any within the same time. The court adjourned the hearing for six weeks.
