DHH continues to preserve Himalayan grandeur

Gangtok, Mar 26: The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handlooms (DHH) has survived the test of time, in its endeavour to preserve the rich cultural legacy of this Himalayan state.

The memories of its past achievements will come alive during the golden jubilee celebrations of the DHH scheduled to be held from April 1.

Established in 1957 under the royal patronage of the then Choygal, the DHH was originally known as Palden Thendup Cottage Industries with just 28 trainees in four crafts - thanka painting, carpet weaving, handloom weaving and hand-made paper making.

The name was later changed to Government Institute of Cottage Industries in 1974. In 1980, however, the name was changed again to what it is now called.

Today the DHH stands as a beacon to the artistes and craftsmen of this state who undergo vigorous training at its 29 branches spread across the state.

''An elaborate itinerary has been chalked out by the DHH for its ten-day golden jubilee celebrations,'' DHH director Namrata Thapa said here yesterday.

A craft mela that will witness participation by all the northeastern states and West Bengal, photo exhibition, a theme pavilion and a cultural bonanza are some of the major highlights of the golden jubilee celebrations, she said.

Chief Minister Pawan Chamling will inaugurate the celebrations on April 1. He will also launch the website of the institute besides releasing a souvenir on the occasion. Former employees of the DHH will also be felicitated by the Chief Minister, Ms Thapa said.
