Chennai, Mar 22: The opening day of the budget session of Tamil Nadu Assembly was today adjourned without transacting any business after paying homage to a legislator and four former members of the House.

Soon after the house assembled for the day, Speaker R Avudaiyappan read out obituary references in respect of the deceased members and later a condolence resolution mourning the death of Opposition AIADMK member S V Shanmugham on February five this year.

Mr Shanmugham, who was elected from Madurai West in the May 2006 Assembly polls, hit the headlines when he openly praised DMK leader and Local Administration Minister M K Stalin at an official function following which he was sidelined by the AIADMK.

A couple of months later he died of heart attack.

The Speaker read out the condolence resolution and recalled his dedicated service to the society. The House observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the departed member.

Earlier, the house observed two minutes silence to condole the deaths of former members K Pazhanivelan, Ms S Sundarambal, V Malaikannan and A Swamidhas.
