SC grants bail to former Mumbai Police official in Telgi case

New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) The Supreme Court today granted bail to former Joint Commissioner of Mumbai Police arrested for facilitating Abdul Karim Telgi in the over Rs 2250-crore counterfeit and fake stamp paper scandal.

A Bench, comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran, directed the special court, Pune, to release the appellant Shridhar Suman Vagal on furnishing the bail bond of Rs two lakh with two solvent sureties of the like amount.

The Court also directed Vagal to surrender his passport before the special court.

The prosecution case is that during his tenure as Joint Commissioner (Crime), Vagal colluded and aided Telgi in his illegal activities. He was arrested on November 7, 2003. Other senior officers of the Mumbai Police, including the then Mumbai Police Commissioner R S Sharma, are also facing allegations of aiding and abetting the illegal activities of Telgi.
