Ratification of revised statutes of Stockholm Insititute
New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave approval for ratifying the revised statutes of International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), Stockholm.
The ratification takes care of India's concerns regarding membership and governance at IDEA, which would now be directed by State Parties, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters after the Cabinet meeting.
It will allow India a more active role in areas like assistance in democracy building processes.
It will also give India more appropriate opportunities to provide expertise in constitution building, electoral planning, design, management and assistance in election processes, Parliamentary procedures and local self-governing institutions.
The ratification would be carried out after obtaining the President's signature, Mr Dasmunsi said.
The Institute was established as an international inter-governmental organisation by 14 founding members at a Conference held in Stockholm on February 27, 1995.
It was registered in accordance with article 102 of the United Nations Charter and has observer status in the UN General Assembly since 2003.
