New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) today sought a detailed report from the West Bengal Government on the ''police firing'' in Nandigram in which a woman was killed and several injured.

In a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, NCW chairperson Girija Vyas said the Commission is deeply concerned about the incidents that took place at Nandigram in East Midnapore district on March 14.

''We are shocked to learn that in the violence, among others, one woman was killed, several injured and that there are also allegations of rape and molestation,'' she said.

Expressing concern over the ''the state of lawlessness in Nandigram'', Ms Vyas sought the number of women killed and injured in the firing.

The Commission has also sought information on whether any other woman was killed by anti-social elements in Nandigram in the last two to three months and whether police firing was the sole cause of the killing of women or injury to them on March 14.

It also wants to know the kind of compensation being given to the families of the killed and to the injured women, the kind of inquiry being made on Police action in Nandigram on March 14 and whether any separate probe was being held on charges of rape.
