New Delhi, Mar 22 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today called for realising energy independence through hydel capacity, nuclear energy and non-conventional renewable energy like solar energy, and said India's power generating capacity could increase to 400,000 MW from the existing 130,000 MW by 2030.

Addressing a select gathering at the majestic Ashoka Hall in Rashtrapati Bhavan after conferring the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding for 2005 on Kenyan conservationist and Nobel Laureate Wangari Muta Maathai, the President said India would be willing to share its experiences with other countries.

Quoting a recent article which mentioned about dumping of 30 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by all nations every year, Dr Kalam said the dumping arose because of the use of fossil fuels which directly affected the ozone layer in the atmosphere.

''I believe that the solution for this is by resolving to realise energy independence through the use of large proportion of renewable energy by all countries,'' he said.

Lauding Prof Maathai's persistent efforts and struggle for democracy, human rights and environment conservation, the President said humanity even today is confronted with problems of development in the midst of inequalities and fast deteriorating environment.

It was, therefore, necessary to create a climate in which human talent and creativity could be forged for greater benefit of all humankind, he added.

Observing that Prof Maathai had evolved innovatively a movement with 600 community networks across Kenya and branches in 20 countries resulting in the planatation of 31 million trees, the President said her mission had to spread to all parts of the planet.

He said Prof Maathai gives a new meaning to planting a tree by extending it to the whole life and highlights the qualities of patience, persistence and commitment in planning and realisig a future.

''She believes that no matter how dark the cloud, there is always a thin silver lining, and that is what we must look for. The silver lining will come, if not to us, then to the next generation or the generation after that. And may be with that generation, the lining will no longer be thin,'' the President said.
