Chandigarh, Mar 22 (UNI) Naresh Gujral, son of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, and Haryana Congress Working President Ram Prakash were today elected unopposed in the by-election to two Rajya Sabha seats from Punjab and Haryana respectively.

Mr Gujral, a chartered accountant by profession, was the SAD-BJP alliance candidate for the by-election to fill the lone seat from Punjab, which fell vacant due to the death of senior Congress leader Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder.

Speaking to reporters after his election here, Mr Gujral said he would act as an ambassador for Punjab and try to get maximum benefits for the state. ''Many members of my father's former cabinet are still ministers in the current government and I would try to utilise those links for the benefit of Punjab,'' said Mr Gujral, who also takes care of an orphanage run by his family in Jalandhar.

In interaction with reporters, Dr Ram Prakash, the Congress nominee for the Rajya Sabha seat in Haryana which fell vacant due to death of Indian National Lok Dal leader Sumitra Mahajan, stressed that he would pursue the long-standing issue of his state with the Centre, apart from taking up national matters.

He also emphasised that he would try to promote the high values and traditions set up by the Gandhi-Nehru family in public life.

Mr Gujral, who is a Political Affairs Committee member of the SAD, had unsuccesfully contested the last Lok Sabha elections from Jalandhar.

Dr Ram Prakash, a retired professor of the Panjab university, was appointed Haryana Congress working President after the Bhupinder Singh Hooda Government assumed office two years ago.

Today was the last day of withdrawal of candidature. Since no other person had filed papers for the posts, their election was a foregone conclusion.
