Drass records 5 feet of fresh snowfall in J and K

Kargil, Mar 21 (UNI) Drass, the world's second coldest place, has experienced about five feet of fresh snowfall, leading to closure of almost all roads.

Roof and tree tops, roads and electric poles are under about five feet of white blanket in Drass as five feet of snowfall was recorded in the world's second coldest place after Siberia.

People remained confined to their homes as all link and main roads were cut off due to snowfall, heaviest in this season during the past several years. A number of electric poles were uprooted, disrupting electric supply.

It was heavily snowing in Mushkoo valley, Tololing and Marpola during the past three days.

The 60-km-long Drass-Kargil road has also been closed for traffic due to heavy snowfall and landslides at Matyan.

The Srinagar-Drass is already closed since November 15 last year due to heavy snowfall at Zojila, Gumri and Zero point.

People in Pandrass, Matyan Mushkoo and Drass have been advised to remain indoor because of snow avalanche threat.

Snowfall has also disrupted mobile and other Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) phone and WLL service.
