MHAA expresses solidarity with Pakistan judges, lawyers
Chennai, Mar 20 (UNI) The Madras High Court Advocates Association (MHAA) members today expressed solidarity with Pakistan lawyers and judges, who have gone on boycott, protesting an against assault on judiciary.
At an extraordinary general-body meeting of MHAA here, association members passed a resolution expressing deep concern and anguish over the manner in which the Chief Justice of the Pakistan Supreme Court was divested of his post and kept under house arrest.
Telephone lines were also cut off even before the Supreme Court Judicial Council could inquire into the matter and find out whether he had done anything inconsistent with his high-judicial office.
They reiterated that a free-and-fair judiciary was an essential of democracy and protection of human rights. Any attempt to weaken it would be contrary to the rule of law, they added and wished the legal fraternity of Pakistan all success in their struggle.
