Lok Sabha adjourned over final award of CWDT

New Delhi, Mar 20 (UNI) Members of the DMK, MDMK, PMK and the Congress protested against taking up a discussion on the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal in the Lok Sabha forcing Speaker Somnath Chatterjee to adjourn the House.

As the House reassembled at 1600 hrs, the Speaker allowed a discussion on the national assets affecting the lives of citizens of certain states.

''We should discuss the issue in a constructive and dispassionate manner without hurting the sentiments of others,'' he appealed to the members.

Soon after Mr Ananth Kumar (BJP) initiated the discussion the DMK members rushed to the well of the House raising objection to the initiation of the discussion.

The DMK, MDMK, PMK and Congress MPs from Karnataka members were heard saying the discussion on Cauvery waters was not justified.

Mr Ananth Kumar said it was ''great injustice'' to Karnataka and the final award cannot be implemented so the government must intervene in the matter.

As the members from Tamil Nadu trooped in the well of the House, Mr Chatterjee adjourned the House for half-an-hour till 1630.

When the House reassembled at 1630, the agitating members again rushed to the well of the House raising objection against the resumed discussion on the Cauvery issue.

When the Speaker found it difficult to conduct the business of the House, he said ''I have talked to the leaders. It is unfortunate that discussion cannot take place in this atmosphere in the House.'' The Speaker then adjourned the House.
