Karunanidhi adopting double standards on Cauvery: Jaya

Chennai, Mar 20 (UNI) AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today charged Chief Minister M Karunanidhi with adopting double standards on the Cauvery issue.

In a statement here, she said the DMK, while it was out of power in 1991, adopted a resolution in a general council meeting demanding gazette notification of the interim award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

However, Mr Karunanidhi had now turned down her demand for immediate gazette notification of the final award, she said.

''Mr Karunanidhi should explain to people which of the stands taken by him was correct,'' she demanded.

Ms Jayalalithaa said the legal opinions expressed by two senior counsels -- K Parasaran and B P Rao -- on the issue of gazetting the final award with immediate effect were totally ''incorrect.'' Pointing out that Mr Parasaran was a counsel for the state government and his son was serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India, she accused the Chief Minister of getting legal opinions from him as per his wish.

The AIADMK supremo also said Mr Rao had appeared on behalf of the Karnataka on the same Cauvery issue in 1991. ''Instead of seeking the opinion of Mr Rao, Mr Karunanidhi could have strengthened his argument that the gazette notification was impossible by getting the opinion of the Karnataka Chief Minister,'' she remarked.
