Meghalaya's Assembly pay tributes to first NE woman Parliamentarian

Shillong, Mar 19 (UNI) Meghalaya Assembly today paid glowing tributes to educationist and the first woman MP from the North East Bonily Khongmen.

Ms Khongmen (92) who passed away here yesterday was laid to rest today in the All Saints' Church cemetery, near the official residence of General Officer Commanding, 101 Area.

The members of the House recalled her contribution and observed a two minute silence in memory of the departed soul .

Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang said the death of Ms Khongmen was not only a great loss to her family but to the nation as a whole.

Union Minister in-charge Tribal Affairs P R Kyndiah, Meghalaya Governor M M Jacob and other senior leaders along with the members of the House have also sent their condolences to the bereaved family members.

The House was adjourned one hour before schedule to enable the members to participate in her funeral today.

Ms Khongmen was elected to Parliament in the country's first General Elections in 1952. She had also served as the Deputy Speaker of Asom.
