Shillong, Mar 19 (UNI) Meghalaya's Agriculture Minister Manirul Islam Sarkar today informed the Assembly that the government could not utilise the budget alloted to the department during 2005-06 for various reasons.

Replying to a query during the Question Hour, Mr Sarkar said one of the reasons was non-release of funds by the Centre under the 12th Finance Commission Award.

However, he said his department had spent Rs 495.09 lakh against an outlay of Rs 486.45 lakh during 2005-06 in five major agricultural schemes.

Earlier, the minister told the House that the total irrigated area covered in Jaintia Hills district was 3431.91 hectares.

Meanwhile, the House has approved new allocation of time proposed by the business advisory committee to the house.

The assembly would now be in session till April 19 instead of April 16.

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Finance will present the state's budget on March 21.
