UGS Chairman grants PhD degree to doctor for his thesis on Pranayam

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Mar 18 (UNI) University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Dr Sukhdeo Thorat today presented a PhD degree to Dr Giridhar Karajgaonkar at the convocation ceremony of the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (Bamu), held at the Bamu campus here.

This is the first time that an inter-disciplinary project for a PhD degree has been accepted and the doctorate awarded to a medical practitioner-turned-pranayama expert.

The thesis, submitted by Dr Karajgaonkar, is an unique combination of a study on psychology, spiritualism, allopathic medical science and philosophy.

In his thesis titled 'Role of Pranayama, Meditation and Diet in certain Psychosomatic Disorders, Dr Karajgaonkar had concluded that the ancient art of living is the only solution without any side effects for modern day disorders like blood pressure, diabetes, depression and obesity.

Dr Karajgaonkar, an MBBS and MS (General Surgery), has been engaged in medical practice for last 25 years.

It is also the first time in the world that a researcher has derived the mechanism of Pranayama in which oxygenisation of the blood is increased, followed by an increase in the level of energy, which inturn activates the inactive cells of the body, thus restoring the disturbed physiology.

Apart from the PhD on Pranayama, the UGC Chairman also presented 95 other PhDs on various other topics, besides presenting degrees to the 5,384 graduates of various faculties of Bamu at the convocation ceremony.

Bamu's Vice Chancellor Dr Nagnath Kotapalle was present on the occasion.
