NHDP to take up 550 kms road in Orissa-Muniyappa

Bhubaneswar, Mar 18 (UNI) The National Highway Development Programme (NHDP) will take up additional 550 kms road in Orissa considering the rapid industrial growth and movement of mining traffic in the state.

Disclosing this to newsmen here today, Union Minister of state for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa said four lanning of the NH-215, NH-200 and NH-6 in the state have been taken up on priority and the detail project reports for all these projects had already been taken up.

The Union Minister said out of the 434 kms Chennai-Kolkata Golden Quadrangle (GQ) under NHDP phase 1 falling under Orissa, already 326 kms of four lanning have been completed and the rest part would be likely to be completed by December 2008.

He said the 434 kms stretch would have been completed by the end of 2006 but delayed due to problems in land acquisition,environment and forest clearance, cutting of trees and removal of electric poles.

The Union Minister regretted that the state government was not cooperating as per their expectation to complete the remaining stretch of the GQ project.

Mr Muniyappa said the improvement of the NH-224 from Khurda to Bolangir had already been taken up by the NHDP on a priority. Already 51 kms of improvement of riding surface and 44 kms of two lanning at a total cost of Rs.76 crore had been sanctioned.

He urged the state government to expedite the land acquisition and clear other hurdles so that the Panikoili-Keonjhar-Rimuli, the Rimuli-Roxy extended road, Dubri-Chandikhol and Chandikhol-Talcher, Puri-Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur-Baragarh four land road would be taken up by the NHDP.
