Expedite rehabilitation works for tsunami victims:Chidambaram

Chennai, Mar 18 (UNI) Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to expedite the rehabilitation works, especially the construction of houses for the Tsunami victims, by utilising the sanctioned central funds.

Launching the Tsunami Jan Bima Yojana, an exclusive insurance policy for the tsunami victims by the United India Insurance here , Mr Chidambaram said soon after the tsunami, the Centre evolved three types of schemes for the welfare of the people during natural calamities.

Admitting delay in implementing these schemes, due to some unavoidable reasons, he said the Centre was committed to implement the same as early as possible.

He said the Centre had sanctioned Rs 5000 crore exclusively for Tamil Nadu to carry out tsunami relief operations and construct houses for the Tsunami victims.

In Tamil Nadu, of the 22,000 houses constructed for the tsunami victims, 3500 were constructed by the Tamil Nadu government and the rest by various Non Governmental Organisations, he added.
