Court sentences bribe-stained registrar to 3 yrs imprisonment

Palanpur, Mar 18 (UNI) A fast-track court in Patan has sentenced a suspended deputy registrar of the Hemchandra North Gujarat University (HNGU) to three years' imprisonment for accepting a bribe of Rs 1000 to alter marksheet of a student in 2005.

Judge A B Bhatt found Manoj Goswami guilty of accepting the bribe and sentenced him to 3 years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1000.

Goswami had demanded a bribe of Rs 2000 from a BEd student of Modasa for increasing 5 per cent in his marksheet. As per the deal, Rs 1000 was to be paid in advance, while the remaining amount after an amendment of the marksheet.

But Goswami did a turnaround and insisted that the balance be paid in advance before making any alteration in the marksheet. The student then approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths of Mehasana branch.

The officials laid a trap and caught the deputy registrar red-handed while accepting Rs 1000 as bribe from the student in 2005.

It is the first case of its kind for HNGU since it came into being in 1986.
