Sale, use of polythene bags banned in Kargil

Srinagar, Mar 17 (UNI) The District Magistrate, Kargil, has imposed a ban on the use and sale of polythene bags in the entire town in Ladakh region of the Jammu and Kashmir.

An official spokesman said the areas where the ban is remain enforced included Drass, Sankoo, Panikhar, Padum Zanskar, Shargole and Shakar Chickten blocks with effect from March 31.

The ban has been enforced in exercise of the powers conferred under section 133 of Criminal Procedure Code.

He said the step was taken in compliance with the State Pollution Control Board's direction to impose a ban on the use and sale of polythene bags in major cities and towns.

The Spokesman said those found violating the ban will have to face imprisonment upto five years and a fine of Rs one lakh or both.

The District Magistrate has directed all concerned agencies to strictly implement the order in letter and spirit.
