Srinagar, Mar 17 (UNI) An alert Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan today foiled a militant plan to target an army convoy when he stopped vehicle seconds before an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off on the outskirts of the city on Srinagar-Baramulla road this afternoon.

Elsewhere in Jammu and Kashmir one person was killed and a militant of Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) was arrested overnight.

An official spokesman said one Mohammad Sayed Najar, who was injured in a mine blast at Baramulla yesterday, died in the hospital today. With this a total of two were killed and nine others wounded in the blast.

A CRPF spokesman told UNI that a CRPF jawan of Road Opening Party (ROP) noticed some people coming down from a white Maruti car at Tengpora, bypass, near petrol pump and planting something on the roadside in the mud.

Before he could challenge the occupants of the car, he saw an army convoy coming on the highway. Those who planted the IED escaped in the car, he said.

The CRPF jawan immediately stopped the convoy at a distance from moving ahead, and there was a loud explosion. Had he not stopped the convoy, one or two vehicles would have been hit by the blast, spokesman said.

The road has been damaged in the blast, sound of which was heard in the entire area, including general bus stand Batmaloo.

A resident told UNI over phone that he heard a loud explosion in the area at 1600 hours.

Widow panes of his and adjacent houses were damaged due to impact of the blast, he said.

This was the second blast in the valley during the past 24 hours.

Security forces and police in a joint operation arrested a JeM militant along with three hand grenades, four detonators, seven AK rounds and 700 grams of explosive at Pulwama.
