MP, Rajasthan to ink river link project
Bhopal, Mar 17 (UNI) Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will shortly sign a memorandum of understanding in the presence of Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for launching the Parvati-Kalisindh-Chambal river link project.
The MoU will be signed at an early date suitable to the Prime Minister, Madhya Pradesh Water Resources Minister Anup Mishra told the Assembly today.
This will be the second river link project being taken up by Madhya Pradesh after the first Ken-Betwa link project signed by MP and Uttar Pradesh under the river linking project initiated during the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA regime, Mr Mishra said.
The MP-Rajasthan project envisages construction of seven dams on the Chambal and its tributaries and three dams on Parvati, Nevaj and Kalisindh rivers.
Replying to the debate on the Rs 1150 crore budgetary demands of the Water Resources, Ayacut, Minor Irrigation and Foreign-aided Irrigation project departments for 2007-08, which were passed by a voice vote, Mr Mishra said Bawanthadi and other inter-state projects would be taken up soon.
Charging that the previous Congress regime had neglected irrigation projects, he said the BJP government had given priority to complete all incomplete and ongoing projects, besides taking up new projects. Lift irrigation projects, which were inoperational due to various reasons, would be taken up at the government level, he announced.
Balaghat and Katni districts were also included in the World Bank-aided water sector restructuring project enlarging its coverage to 32 districts, Mr Mishra said.
