Kolkata, Mar 17 (UNI) Veteran CPI(M) leader Jyoti Basu today denied having criticised the police for Nandigram firing and blamed media for cooking up stories over his reaction in a Left Front meeting.

''You are putting words into my mouth as having said that police made unprovoked firing, which I have not. I am a disciplined party man,'' Mr Basu told reporters after coming out of the crucial extended meeting of the Left Front in the CPI(M) state headquarters.

After the front meeting, held on March 15, the media reported that Mr Basu was highly critical of the police firing at Nandigram, in which 14 people were killed and questioned how bullet marks were found on the back of some of the victims.

He also reportedly snobbed Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for not taking into confidence the smaller partners before taking important decisions.

Mr Basu also reportedly reminded that the Front government was being run by a coalition and not by a single party.
