Four killed in two accidents, mob goes berserk

Purulia/Howrah, Mar 17 (UNI) At least four people, including a girl, were killed and ten seriously injured in two accidents today.

Police said in the first accident the driver of a bus lost control and the vehicle plunged into a farmland 15 feet below the road while giving way to a police van, nearly 50 km from Purulia.

Three people died on the spot. The ten injured were admitted to hospital.

An irate mob later set ablaze a police van.

Additional Superintendent of Police Rajiv Kumar, who visited the spot along with a team, said the toll was likely to increase as some bodies lying under the bus were yet to be recovered.

However, unofficial sources had put the toll at ten.

Police had cordoned off the area and were carrying out rescue operations.

Meanwhile, in Howrah district a bus knocked down a girl of class eight while she was crossing the road at Jagadispur in Liluah.

Furious villagers set the bus on fire, police said.
