Court issues arrest warrants against Congress leader

Amritsar, Mar 16 (UNI) A Baba Bakala court today issued arrest warrants against prominent Congress leader and former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa in a criminal case registered under section 302 and other sections of the IPC at the Beas police station.

The case was registered against Dimpa, his brothers, Rajan and Harmanbir, an SP-ranking officer with the Punjab Police and 13 others following the death of a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) activists on January 29, during the assembly election campaign. The violence had led to the postponement of polls in the Beas constituency from February 13 to March 11.

Dimpa who had lost the election from Beas to the SAD candidate Manjinder Singh Kang, has reportedly gone 'underground' after the announcement of the result on March 14.

In all, 16 persons were named in the criminal case which was probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Punjab Police.

So far 12 persons have been arrested, including Rajan, the youngest brother of the Congress leader who had won from the Beas constituency in the 2002 polls.

The arrest warrants were issued by the Baba Bakala, first class judicial magistrate this afternoon. The anticipatory bail application of Dimpa and his brother Harmanbir were rejected by the Amritsar Sessions Court.
