CBI team begins investigation in Nandigram

Kolkata, Mar 16: A three-member CBI team today started their investigation into Wednesday's police firing at Nandigram in which 14 people were killed.

Police said the team, headed by Joint Director(East) B B Mishra, began its field investigation from Khejuri.

The team stayed at Haldia, about 70 km from Nandigram in East Midnapore district last night, before moving into the conflict zone early today.

A 10-member CBI team headed for the spot this morning.

IG, Western Range Anup Gupta said, "The CBI team was heading for the spot where the firing took place." Calcutta High Court yesterday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to send a team to inquire the Nandigram police firing that killed 14 people and left over 40 injured.

A two-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar, took up the case suo moto and issued a ruling, saying none could imagine such an incident in a democracy.

The court directed the CBI to submit its report within seven days.
