New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) The Union Cabinet today gave its approval for enhancing the age of superannuation from 62 to 65 years for teaching positions in centrally funded educational institutions under the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

There is also a provision for re-employment beyond 65 years and upto 70 years of age against sanctioned vacancies if they are not filled up by regular candidates after screening under the UGC guidelines at the age of 65 years, said Minister for Information and Broadcasting P R Dasmunshi.

In order to meet the growing demand for high quality personnel both in the technical and non-technical field, there is a need not only for qualitative improvement of teaching staff in the institutions of higher education including those in the field of technical education, but also for further expansion of the existing capacities.

As part of its constitutional responsibility for co-ordination, determination and maintenance of standards of higher education, the Central government has from time to time been deciding about the pay structure and other service conditions including age of retirement in respect of faculties of centrally funded institutions of higher education including those in the field of technical education.

During the recent years, the higher educational institutions have been facing rather acute shortage of faculty in various disciplines.

The Cabinet's decision for enhancing the age of retirement of faculty member in all the centrally funded educational institutes will help retain the retiring faculty members with a view to meeting the shortage of faculty.
