AASU opposed to Delimitation Commission's report on Asom

New Delhi, Mar 15 (UNI) A high-level delegation of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) met Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Chairman Delimitation Commission (DC) Justice Kuldeep Singh here today and urged them to keep in abeyance the DC report as it would be a violation of the Assam Accord.

The delegation leaders said the tripartite Assam Accord review was signed between the Central Government, AASU and the Assam State Government in March, 2005 which was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

They said as per the review the Centre as well as the State Government agreed to prepare and update the National Register of Citizens (NRC) as the demography of this North Eastern State of Assam is seriously under threat in view of the large scale influx of people from across the border from the neighbouring Bangladesh.

The Government had so far done nothing for the preparation and updating of the NRC while moving ahead for the imlementation of the DC report.

Any change in the electoral status by way of implementing the DC report would adversely affect the people's representation process in democracy in view of its very sensitive nature and geographical position of the state.

The delegation was led by AASU advisor Dr Samajjul Bhattacharjee along with AASU President Shankar Prasad Ray and Party General Secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi and its Lok Sabha MP Sarbanand Sonowal.

Home Minister assured the delegation to look into their issues.

Justice Singh said he would review the report provided the Centre issues an advisory in this respect to his office.
