K'taka Assembly takes up Cauvery award discussion
Bangalore, Mar 14 (UNI) A resolution moved by the Opposition Congress on the final decision of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was today taken up for discussion by the Karnataka Assembly, with members challenging the legality of the award.
A four-line resolution, moved by Leader of the Opposition N Dharam Singh, said the State was committed to fight the award legally and constitutionally until justice was rendered to the State farmers. The resolution was seconded by Congress member Siddaramaiah.
Mr Singh described the verdict as a big blow to the farmers of the State and demanded the House adopt an unanimous resolution and bring it to the notice of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The onus was on Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to ensure justice to the farmers in the Cauvery basin region, for whom it was a matter of life and death.
Earlier, the House was adjourned for a brief period after Mr Singh, who gave notice of the resolution, wanted it to be taken up immediately. However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M P Prakash said the issue could be taken up after the Business Advisory Committee discussed it.
