Adam's bridge; BJP constitutes five-member committee of MPs

Chennai, Mar 14 (UNI) The BJP has constituted a five-member committee of party MPs to make a study and come out with proposals to save the Adam's bridge in Palk Straits without affecting the Sethusamudram Ship Canal Project, party National Secretary S Thirunavukkarasar said today.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the committee, headed by senior leader Murli Manohar Joshi, would comprise former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha and former Shipping Minister Ved Prakash Goyal, besides himself.

He said the committee would begin its study after the ongoing parliamentary session was over and submit a report to the Centre as early as possible.

It may be recalled that various Hindu outfits had strongly condemned the ongoing dredging work under SSCP at Palk Strait, which had caused damage to the Adam's bridge called 'Ramar bridge' in Hindu mythology.

Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy had even demanded that the Centre take steps to declare it a heritage site by UNESCO.
