Sensex crosses 13,000 mark in mid-morning session

Mumbai, Mar 13 (UNI) The BSE Sensex today crossed 13,000 mark and touched 13,026 points in the mid-morning session, after resuming high at 12,924 points with a modest gain of 22 points from its last close of 12,902.63 points as buying continued for the index based pivotals, brokers said.

Later, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Sensitive Index (Sensex) rose 51.48 points, to 12,956.23. It had opened higher, at 12,924.50, and surged to a high of 13,026.85. Its low for the day is at 12,889.64 during the mid-morning session.

Meanwhile, the C&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE), however, opened flat at 3,735.25 points. Later, it recorded a high at 3,772.70 and a low at 3,732.05 points during the intra-day trade. The current index is quoted high at 3,765.80 with a small gain around by 31 points from its last finish of 3,734.60 points.

HDFC Bank was the top gainer, up by 1.54 per cent to Rs 965.90, on thin volumes (3,212 shares).

Tata Steel (up 1.10 per cent to Rs 440.95), BHEL (up 1.01 per cent to Rs 2,125) and Satyam Computers (up 1.49 per cent to Rs 449) were the other gainers.

Index heavyweight RIL was up 0.55 per cent to Rs 1,323.85. As many as 74,984 shares changed hands in the counter on BSE.

Cipla was the top loser, down by 1.35 per cent to Rs 229.55, on a volume of 23,087 shares.

Cement stocks Gujarat Ambuja (down 1.24 per cent to Rs 103.90), ACC (down 1.02 per cent to Rs 740) and ITC (down 1.14 per cent to Rs 147.30) were the other losers.

Key Asian markets were in the red today and the markets overall were mixed. Benchmark indices in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and South Korea were down 0.3 per cent each, while the benchmark indices in China and Taiwan were up between 0.1 and 0.7 per cent.

US stocks advanced on Monday, helped by deal news, cheaper oil and positive broker comments on the chip sector. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 42.30 points, or 0.34 per cent, to end at 12,318.62. The Standard&Poor's 500 Index was up 3.75 points, or 0.27 per cent, to finish at 1,406.60.

The NASDAQ Composite Index was up 14.74 points, or 0.62 per cent, to close at 2,402.29 yesterday.

Crude oil languished around USD 59 a barrel on Tuesday after dropping to a three-week low on Monday on warmer US weather.

Comments from OPEC members that were taken as a signal the group would not cut output at the meeting this week in Vienna, also helped curb prices.

The next trigger for the domestic bourses may come from global bourses. US Federal Reserve holds a two-day meet on March 20, 2007, to decide US interest rates. The latest US job data helped eased expectations of a possible rate cut by the Federal Reserve, brokers added.
