Mulayam Singh's days are numbered, says Cong
New Delhi, Mar 13 (UNI) The Congress today claimed that the Mulayam Singh Government in Uttar Pradesh was in the grip of the fear of not returning to power as the Assembly elections are fast approaching.
''The irritation and the fear of not coming back to power are increasing day by day in the Mulayam government as the elections are approaching,'' Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said.
''This is reflected in every sentence that Mulayam Singh speaks, every action that he takes and every allegation that he makes.'' Citing instances, Mr Singhvi told mediapersons here that Mr Mulayam Singh had called the CBI as a ''rubber stamp forgetting the fact that it was the Supreme Court, not the Congress, which had ordered the CBI to investigate the disproportionate assets of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister.
It was Mr Mulayam Singh who had ordered a CBI inquiry into the Nithari killings, he added.
It was again Mr Mulayam Singh who demanded from the ''roof tops'' that had led to the CBI inquiry into the Taj Corridor case involving BSP chief Mayawati, he added.
Accusing Mr Mulayam Singh of making veiled attack, Mr Singhvi said the Chief Minister had ''deployed sleuths to spy on former Prime Minister V P Singh.'' ''It is Mr Mulayam Singh's old habit of playing politics behind the scenes,'' he said.
Alleging that the Chief Minister did not hesitate to stoop down to any level, Mr Singhvi pointed out that he had levelled allegations against a sitting judge and later raising an issue of inquiry into a CD.
''Mulayam Singh's days are numbered and therefore, he is gripped with a sense of fear of not coming back to power,'' Mr Singhvi said.
Mr Singhvi said, Mr Singh's statements were aimed at pre-empting proper investigations into the disproportionate assets case against him.
