Indian cellphone manufacturing unit to be set up soon

Kozhikode, Mar 13: Hongkong based-Digital Information Tehnology Studies Ltd (DITS), promoted by a Non-Resident Indian, proposes to set up a cellphone manufacturing unit, first of its kind in the country, very soon.

As a preliminary step to implement the estimated Rs 115 million project, a separate outfit Information Technology Studies (India) Private Limited has already been incorporated, DITS chairman Prateesh V K told reporters here last night.

Of the total project cost, the promotors would invest Rs 30 million, another Rs 30 million by way of equity and the rest Rs 55 million through term loan, he said.

The ambitious project, preferably to be set up in Kerala or at other suitable locations outside the state, would initially provide a direct employemnet to 300 and more than 10,000 people indirectly, he added.

In addition to produce handsets with CDMA and GSM module, the company also proposes to programme software and applications software for mobiles phones.

Apart from marketing the products in the country, the company would explore market in other Asian and Pacific countries, he added.
