CPI(M) plea to YSR on Singure Project

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) The Communist Party of India-Marxist today urged Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy to provide more budgetary allocation to Medak District to complete the Singure Irrigation Project for providing water to irrigated lands besides meeting the drinking water needs.

A large number of party workers from the district, who conducted padayatra to the city and converged at the Indira Park here, submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this regard.

Party District Secretary Ch Ramaulu said Medak was more backward compared to other districts in the state with 60 to 70 per cent of the people dependent on agriculture.

He said farmers in the district were cultivating lands with the help of small tanks and power motors. Only two per cent of farmers were getting water for their lands through the canals, he said.

Mr Ramulu urged the Chief Minister to allocate more funds for the Singure project and provide two tmcft of water as promised by the government.

He said the district party unit had conducted padayatra for 43 days travelling 1,143 kms and submitted representations from the public to the District Collector to solve problems of the district.

Of the 15,000 village tanks in the district, only 5,000 existed now.

The Chief Minister assured to provide sufficient budget allocations to complete the Singure Project, he claimed.
