Court orders issuance of summons to filmstar Vijaya Shanthi
Chennai, Mar 13 (UNI) A local Court today ordered issuance of summons to popular filmstar Vijaya Shanthi, for her appearance before the court on April 19, in connection with a case relating to non-filing of her Income Tax returns for the assessment years 1992-93, 1993-94 and 1994-95 within the statutory due date.
The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (Economic Offences-I) J V Raj ordered issuance of summons to Vijaya Shanthi, after taking the complaint filed by the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Media-Circle-II, Income Tax Department.
In his complaint, the Assistant Commissioner submitted that Vijaya Shanthi had deliberately contravened the Income Tax Act by not furnishing the returns within the statutory due date. Her residence was searched on July 14, 1993 and even after the search, she did not file her returns, despite having a substantial income.
A notice was sent but she neither sent any reply nor filed her returns. Reminders and show-cause notices were also issued, drawing her attention to the prosecution proceedings that will be initiated in the event of non filing of returns within the stipulated time as per the Act and also informed her that exparte assessment would be framed resulting in penalty proceedings and the launching of prosecution proceedings for non-compliance in furnishing her returns within the due date.
Thereafter, she had filed her returns for the year 1992-93 after a delay of 24 months, 1993-94 after a delay of 20 months and 1994-95 after a delay of 12 months, the Assistant Commissioner added.
