Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 13 (UNI) Kerala Local Self Government Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty today informed the Assembly that strict instructions had been issued making waste treatment systems compulsory in hospitals and slaughtering houses.

Replying to questions by Mr K K Divakaran (CPI-M) and others, he said though 47 Municipalities had located lands for setting up of solid waste treatment plants, majority of them were found not suitable and the government had issued necessary directions to the local self government institutions to identify the suitable land by March 31 this year.

Solid waste treatment places had already been introduced in three Municipal Corporations in Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and Thrissur, besides nine townships and panchayats, he said adding a Rs 48.27 crore solid waste treatment project had been submitted to the Centre.

Mr Mohammed disclosed that the government was planning to make necessary changes in the existing laws, to check dumping of wastes in ponds and canals.

The new Act would plug all loopsholes and have provisions to take action against the people who were involved in depositing waste in these areas, the Minister added.
