Solar traffic signals power Pink City
Jaipur, Mar 12 (UNI) The Pink City is undertaking a unique experiment by installing solar-powered traffic signals and blinkers at many crossings.
More than 19 crossings and roads cuts in the city now boast of solar panels placed on signal posts in an effort to save on energy and cost.
Traffic department sources said these solar panels have been set up in places where it is difficult to install electrically-controlled panels and where the accident probability is high.
The solar panels absorb the sunlight, charge the batteries and light up the traffic signals.
Whatever energy is saved is helped to charge the batteries. The remaining charge in the batteries help to power the signals after sunset.
Sources said the whole process costs Rs 200-300 a month, which is much cheaper than electric-powered traffic signals. Moreover, not much is incurred by the way of maintenance.
With a positive report of solar powered traffic signals, the traffic department has plans to install more such solar signals at many other junctions of the city.
Places like Governor House crossings, PWD headquarters, and Delhi Road have been hit by solar signals.
