Punjab to promote sale of fat-free skimmed milk

Chandigarh, Mar 12 (UNI) The Punjab government has decided to promote sale of skimmed cow milk in the cities and towns of the state being sold through Milkfed, so as to check the intake of fat by consumers.

The concept of marketing skimmed cow milk, which is fat free will be taken up as a pilot project in the urban areas, Cooperation Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh said while addressing a media conference here today.

This project is being taken up with the view to address the issue of high incidence of obesity, coronary and other related diseases linked to high fat content products, he said while referring to the high incidence of heart disease in Punjab.

The Minister said in order to ensure quality and fair price for the consumers and to enhance the products and brands being produced by various organisations under the cooperative umbrella, an integrated marketing organisation would be set up.

This organisation would look into all aspects of marketing, including quality of production, branding, image building and selling of all products being manufactured by the different cooperative organisations, including Markfed and Milkfed.

A proper market survey would be carried out by this organisation in order to introduce new products and also to increase consumer awareness about the requirement and value of products, linking these to health issues, he added.
