PM assures action on Indian fishermen killing
New Delhi, Mar 12: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today assured a delegation of Tamil Nadu MPs that the government would initiate necessary measures to end the killing of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy within the territorial waters of India off the Kachchadivu island.
The delegation, consisting of MPs from the DMK, Congress, PMK, MDMK and the Left parties, was led by Shipping and Transport Minister T R Baalu. The MPs of the AIADMK and the BJP did not join the delegation.
The delegation presented a memorandum to the Prime Minister highlighting the problems faced by the Indian fishermen in the high seas within India's territorial limits.
Dr Singh told the MPs that he had already sent a detailed letter to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi detailing the steps taken by the Centre on the issue.
The issue figured in both the Houses of Parliament during Question Hour earlier in the day.
The MPs also sought the intervention of Dr Singh to allow use of Tamil in the proceedings of courts in the state.
