Bangalore, Mar 12: Holding a condom and sporting the caption "Millions who desperately need protection from pregnancy can't even get the condoms unwrapped."

Hot Latin star of television shows such as PBS' American Family and the sitcom The George Lopez Show, Constance Marie has donated her talents to appear in a brand-new ad for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals India (PETA).The ad, which refers to dogs and cats, ends with the tagline, "Save lives by having your animal companions spayed and neutered."

The ad comes in wake of the animal overpopulation crisis in Bangalore which has resulted in arbitary catching of street dogs who make their home in, and guard, communities. Studies by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Animal Welfare Board of India (Ministry of Environment&Forests) show that mass sterilisation of community animals is the most viable solution to overpopulation. Dr. K. Bogel, Chief Veterinarian, Public Health Unit, WHO in Switzerland says: "All too often, authorities confronted with the problems caused by these dogs have turned to mass destruction in the hope of finding a quick solution, only to discover that the destruction had to continue, year after year with no end in sight". According to www.spayusa.org , an unspayed female dog, her mate and all of their puppies, if none are ever neutered or spayed, add up to a whopping 67000 dogs in 6 years!

WHO recommends mass vaccination of dogs as the only effective way to eradicate human rabies. Mass vaccination has helped prevent human rabies mortality in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Sri Lanka.

People who have the time, money, love, and patience to make a life-long commitment to an animal should adopt from shelters rather than buying from pet stores or breeders. Every newborn puppy purchased from a breeder leaves one fewer home for a dog desperately waiting in a shelter or roaming the streets.

"Simple surgery - spaying for females, neutering for males - is the only solution and the only kind solution for the dog over population crisis in Bangalore" says PETA's Rohini Kamath.
