Chennai, Mar 12 (UNI) The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu today took out a protest rally and staged an hour-long demonstration to condemn the indiscriminate killing of Tamil fishermen by the Lankan navy, even as fishermen in Rameswaram stayed away from sea to condemn the killings.

The protest rally and the demonstration was led by Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister K P P Samy in which more than 5,000 DMK activists participated.

Tamil Nadu Ministers Arcot N Veerasamy, K Duraimurugan, M K Stalin, Parithi Elamvazhuthi and T M Anbarasan and party functionaries J Anbazhagan and L Balaraman were among those who participated in the rally from the Munroe statue to Chepauk Guest where the demonstration was held.

Later, Mr Samy accompanied by Mr Veerasamy and Mr Stalin submitted a memorandum to Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner P H Amza, urging him to take immediate steps to put an end to the ''undeclared war' indulged in by that country's navy against the fishermen of Tamil Nadu.

Describing the attacks as highly inhuman, uncivilized and against human rights, the memorandum said the party would take with the centre.

Stating that three fishermen were killed and seven seriously injured in the last one month alone, the memorandum said ''these activites of the Lankan navy are highly deplorable and should be condemned with all possible harshest terms''.

Meanwhile, thousands of fishermen in Rameswaram kept away from the sea in protest against the recent killings as part of their two-day agitation.

The fishermen had resolved to stay away from the sea today to draw the government's attention to the continuous attacks.

They would osberve a day-long fast tomorrow.
