Congress to align with secular parties for local body election

Bangalore, Mar 12 (UNI) The Karnataka Congress has decided to forge alliance with secular political parties in the forthcoming election to local bodies in the State, PCC president Mr Mallikarjuna Kharge said today.

Speaking to newsmen after a meeting of senior leaders and office bearers of the party here tonight, Mr Kharge however ruled out having alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) which had joined hands with the ''communal'' Bharatiya Janata Party to form an ''opportunistic'' coalition government ''in the state.'' The President clarified that the alliance with secular parties would be without compromise to party's policies and ideology.

Mr Kharge said that the meeting discussed the drought situation prevailing and the State government's failure to combat it.

Non-issue of BPL cards to the eligible sections of the society and the abolition of Justice U L Bhat Commission constituted to probe the alleged Rs 150 crore bribe by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy from mine operators also figured in the meeting.

Replying to questions, Mr Kharge said that party has decided to explore legal options if state government failed to hold election to the post of the Chairman to the Karnataka Legislative Council in comply with the Governor's directive.
