Law Minister expresses concern over female foeticide
Chandigarh, Mar 10 (UNI) Union Law Minister H R Bhardwaj today stressed the need to change the mindset of the people so as to check the menace of female foeticide.
Addressing a State Level Legal Literacy Seminar on female foeticide at Kurukshetra in Haryana, the Union Minister also specially urged the doctors not to misuse ultrasound technology as they have been educated to give life and not to kill daughters before their birth.
He said it was a misconception that daughters were a burden on a family. Also, it was wrong to say that only a son could open the doors for attaining salvation after death.
He said education of girls could play a vital role in eradicating poverty.
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the efforts made by the State Government have helped in improving the sex ratio.
According to the census 2001, the sex ratio of the State in the age group of 0 to 6 years was 819 females for 1000 males. The data collected at the time of birth in the year 2006 had revealed that it has improved to 857 females for 1000 males.
Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Vijender jain regretted that in cases of female foeticide, it was difficult to find the evidence.
He, therefore, stressed the need for changing the mindset of the people and launch a mass movement to check the problem of female foeticide.
The seminar was organised jointly by Haryana State Legal Services Authority and Haryana Health Department at Kurukshetra today.
