Indian medical research should match global standards: V Adm Byce

Mumbai, Mar 10 (UNI) Western Naval Command's Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Vice Admiral Sangram Singh Byce today said medical fraternity should intensify clinical research to match global standards and provide economical medical solutions to the common man.

He was addressing members of the medical fraternity from the three services at the opening day of the 63rd Annual Conference of the Bombay Medical Congress at the Navy Hospital INHS Ashwini here.

The two-day conference, is a unique event that provides a platform for both defense service and civilian doctors to exchange ideas and advances in the medical profession.

''There was a greater need to establish interaction with the civil medical specialists, since the commonality in areas of operation with them had increased because of terrorism as well as both the natural and man-made disasters,'' Vice Admiral Byce said. He highlighted two areas of concern, which could be addressed by the Bombay Medical Congress. Firstly, he said there was a need to devise a strategy towards promoting medical research, which had not achieved the required global standards and also there was a need to find simple alternative medical options for the needy sections of the society.

President of the Congress Surgeon Vice Admiral Yoginder Singh, VSM, Director General Medical Services (Navy) emphasized on the progress made by the Congress and concerted efforts by the Civil and Defense medical fraternity to improve medical care and education.

The Congress promotes participation by young medical graduates and encourages them to present scientific papers and symposia, he added.

A total of six Inter Medical Colleges are participating this year while 15 high quality papers will be presented by post graduate students and medical officers at the conference.
