Lucknow, Mar 10 (UNI) The next time you wake up feeling feverish and sluggish in the morning, blame the current transitory weather and the change in day/night cycle for the same.

As winter concedes to summers, the nights start to shrink and the days become longer, which ultimately disturbs our body clock and its rhythm.

''As the nights become shorter, our sleep pattern is disturbed and the body starts to adjust to it raising the stress levels,'' Prof Sunil Pradhan, Professor of Neurology Department, Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) told UNI here today.

He said the change in the day/night ratio in favour of the former results in deprivation of sleep.

''Sleep relaxes the body, which manifests itself in waking up fresh and feeling energetic. If we are deprived of sufficient amount of sleep, the effects are opposite,'' he noted.

With the transition in weather, the body rhythm tries to adapt to the change in sleeping hours, which normally starts decreasing in summers.

Besides, there is large amount of invisible pollen in the atmosphere, which enters our nasal cavaties and respiratory tract and causes allergies.

''While, in some people there is 'frank' manifestation of allergy resulting sneezes and mild ailments, in others it (allergy) acts in a sub-clinical way, manifesting in drowsiness, dizziness and sluggishness,'' Prof Pradhan added.

Besides, the body also tries to adjust to the increase in atmospheric temperature, since the current weather is marked by warmer days and colder nights.

''A certain amount of sweat is necessary to maintain the stress levels under control. Hence, proper clothing is of vital importance during March and mid-April,'' he averred.

Prof Pradhan said if the amount of perspiration needed to regulate body temperature is not met, the stress levels increase in body manifesting in laziness.
