Cane grower commits suicide at Parbhani
Parbhani, Maharashtra, Mar 10 (UNI) A 55-year-old sugarcane grower from Chatepimpalgaon village of Pathri tehsil in the district allegedly committed suicide, apparently due to non-crushing of his sugarcane.
The deceased, Rajaram Bapurao Bobde, who had cultivated sugarcane in his three acre farm, allegedly poured kerosene and set afire himself on Thursday night. Bobde, who had suffered about 95 per cent burn injuries, was referred to the District Civil Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the wee hours of yesterday, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Home) N M Mithewad told UNI.
A report here today said, Bobde was worried of the fate of his standing crop, as the crushing season was almost over in the region and his sugarcane was yet to be lifted for crushing.
Police had registered a case of an 'accidental death' under section 174 of the CrPC. A report will be submitted to the Resident District Collector (RDC), about the farmer's death, Mithewad added.
This was the first ever case of a cane grower taking the extreme step to end his life due to non-crushing of his sugarcane in the state.
